The Abbey of Sept-Fons was founded in 1132, it will emerge from anonymity in 1656 by a reform brought by his abbot Dom Eustache de Beaufort. It then experienced one of the most prosperous periods and had up to 150 monks.
The French Revolution marked a pause, in 1791, the monks were expelled, and the Abbey was sold as a national property. A long exodus then began for the monks who were forced to buy the Abbey. They resumed monastic life there in 1845. From 1845 to 1935, under the abbatiat of Dom Chautard, Sept-Fons founded several monasteries around the world and fought for its own economic survival by launching the Germalyne®, the starting point of the GERMA® range.
Today, the Abbey of Sept-Fons has more than 80 members, including youngpeople from all over the world.
Monastic work at the Abbey of Sept-Fons
True to the rule of St Benedict, its members strive to maintain the balance between prayer and work. Grain cultivation and crops from their orchards, vegetable gardens and beehives barely cover the internal needs of the community. Therefore, monks cannot be content with agriculture for a living. This is why the economy of the monastery is based on the activity of the TRAPPE MOULIN, run entirely by the monks. The abbey is equipped with an agri-food factory (mill, jam workshop, storage and shipping building).
Since 1930, the flagship product has been the Germalyne Tradition, the starting point for a range of natural products manufactured or packaged at the monastery. The other products, made by the monks, are made outdoors or by their brothers from Novy-Dvur.
